Unity
is the key to reformation
August 17, 2004
Dear Editor:
I am
sure there are many who feel the frustration expressed by the writer of
the Tuscaloosa News editorial on Aug. 5.
But the constitution is not the only thing that many Alabamians would like
to see reformed.
Some want to institute provisions to provide for term limits and/or recall
of state officials, others want to change the budgeting process to
eliminate the need for proration, or to stop the bleeding caused by
insurance for teachers and state employees, or any of a dozen other
things.
Many of these changes would meet the approval of a majority of voters, yet
they are not made because our Legislature is controlled by lobbyists,
union leaders, and other “Big Mules" on Goat Hill.
What can the advocates of these various reforms do to reach their
disparate goals, then?
My suggestion is that they first must realize, that under the prevailing
circumstances, they can’t. Then, they must find a way to change those
circumstances, and unite to attain the one goal that, when reached, will
provide them with the key they need to unlock the door to their original
goal.
That key, Initiative and Referendum, and one method of securing it, is
examined in my website at www.doctoriq.com.
All parties interested in any type of reform and accountability --
especially media outlets that have the means and obligation to inform the
masses -- are invited to visit there, absorb what is presented, and then
submit their ideas, suggestions or comments on the page provided for that
purpose.
